Ladies and Gentlemen…we present Bouncers

We welcome you to a vision

Of the nineties urban night life

To Stag nights and Hen dos

To drunken crying girls and gallons of booze’

SYNOPSIS

‘Bouncers’ is one of the most frequently performed plays of the twentieth century. The night begins, and four bouncers ready themselves outside the dodgy local nightclub. Girls are tarted up and ready to dance, boys are smarted up and ready for romance – or just a quickie in the club toilets. But alas, someone’s boyfriend cheats on them, someone’s stuck dancing with the ugly one, and they all slink home with nothing but a hotdog and chips for company. The bouncers are left clearing up the mess, only to do it all again the next night.

The four actors perform over twenty different characters between them. Not only will they star as the four main men, but also as the tipsy girls at a twenty-first birthday, the legless lads in search of skirt, the smooth-talking DJ with questionable music taste, and adult film sensation ‘Nobby the Postman’ to name a few.

I have decided to set the play in the late nineties, when cheesy music reigned and people genuinely believed we would win the World Cup. The GWT will become the nightclub; the “Bouncers Experience” will begin at the door…or just outside the door, as the four boys will be there making sure there’s no trouble makers about!

Four (very) versatile and (VERY) energetic actors required to bring to life huge range of weird, wonderful, and very different characters. It will be hard work, it will be tiring…it will be brilliant FUN!

CHARACTERS

Lucky Eric (45-60)- The alpha male of the group. Recently divorced and verging on a nervous breakdown, Eric has seen the dark side of the local nightlife, and he is the most emotionally complex and thoughtful as a result. Alongside the banter there is a very serious side to Eric, evident in his aside monologues. Eric MUST be the oldest bouncer. (Also plays the roles of Maureen, Baz, college boy, drunk rocker, Swedish girl, hot dog seller and more).

Les (30-45)- Les is a rather mysterious character. He is happy to stand back and come out with surprising one-liners. With this, though, Les is very eager to assert his masculinity; he is up for breaking the rules and starting fights if given the chance. (Also plays Rosie, Kev, Radio Presenter, college boy, Birdy, Brian, Punk Rocker, Drunkard and more)

Judd (30-45)- Involved in petty theft and suffering from a serious case of ‘Little Man Syndrome’. Judd constantly (and unsuccessfully) challenges Eric for the alpha position by picking fights and making snide remarks. (Also plays “Plain” Elaine, Terry, Barber, college boy, Video shop owner and more)

Ralph (25-30)- Young, cool, attractive – and he knows it. New to the job but thinks he knows it all. The others patronize him for being the “kid” of the group, which Ralph doesn’t like one bit. (Also plays “Sexy” Suzy, Jerry, DJ, Jock, Mark, Punk Rocker, Nobby the Postman and more)
