In Performance: 17th to 26th April 1958 Presented in April 1958, this American comedy was the last play to be performed in the original Geoffrey Whitworth Theatre, "The Hut". Boy Meets Girl is about Hollywood actors and directors. The Dartford and Gravesend Reporter said of the production: "Gillian Kirkman playing Susie, the wide-eyed innocent, but expectant waitress, was the star of the show." In the story she produces a baby and falls for a shy young English actor. When reminiscing about their first encounter, Susie sighs, "You were in your uniform and I was in my condition." Susie, aka Gillian Kirkman, is now better known as Gill Meason, our Box Office Manager. After the curtain fell on Saturday 26th April 1958 "The Hut" was demolished, in order to make way for a new GWT on the same site. In October 1959 the present building was opened by Dame Sybil Thorndike, accompanied by Sir Lewis Casson, Donald Pleasance and Edward Heath. Thus began another story. |
